In India, over 2 million women and children work as prostitutes. 80% enter against their will and at least 35% are under the age of 18. They are caught in a vicious cycle of poverty, illiteracy and disease that is seemingly inescapable.

In February of 2005, International Princess Project founder Shannon Keith went on a trip to India, that opened her eyes to the complete devastation of lives that was happening on the streets and in the brothels of India. After visiting a red-light district, she could not forget what she had seen- young girls sold by their own famiies, orphans picked up off the street by pimps, even young mothers just trying to feed their children. Many were held against their will. Others were trapped by economics. Many who escaped the brothels often returned just to survive.
Compelled by what she had seen, Shannon and her team of volunteers founded the International Princess Project to advocate for these women, to give them opportunities to restore their broken lives and to empower them to live in freedom. The traditional Indian Sari, worn in even the darkest places of India, became the inspiration for PUNJAMMIES. The sari's bright colors and beautiful designs are fit for a Princess.

PUNJAMMIES are pajamas made from these beautiful fabrics, sewn by the women employed at sewing centers in India, and exported into the US, to be worn by women like US, who choose to wear HOPE!
Proceeds from the sales help to pay wages, provide living expenses, create savings accounts and provide holistic support and restoration for the ladies in the PUNJAMMIE Project. Each purchase brings healing from the past and hope for the future!

Women who leave the brothels need occupational training and job opportunities to help them find dignity, self worth and hope for the future outside of the red light districts.
When women become part of an International Princess Project sewing center, they are taking the first step towards supporting themselves in a dignified way.
