International Justice Mission is a human rights organization that rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, slavery and oppression. IJM documents and monitors conditions of abuse and oppression, educates the church and public about the abuses and mobilizes intervention on behalf of victims.
International Justice Mission is headquartered in Washington, DC, and was founded by Gary Haugen in 1997. As a lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice, Haugen was put on loan to the United Nations to direct their investigation into the Rwandan genocide. The atrocities he witnessed there prompted him to found IJM. Haugen is a prominent speaker and the author of “Good News About Injustice” and “Terrify No More.” Haugen and the work of IJM have been featured by the “Today Show,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “Dateline NBC,” FOX News, MSNBC, CNN, National Public Radio, Forbes Magazine and The New York Times.
IJM HAS A FOUR-FOLD PURPOSE:
• Victim relief – Relieve the victim of the abuse currently being committed.
• Victim aftercare – Provide access to services that help victims transition into their new lives and encourage long-term success.
• Perpetrator accountability – Bring accountability and just consequences under the law to the specific perpetrator(s) of abuse.
• Structural prevention – Prevent the abuse from being committed against others who are also at risk.
“IJM has spurred law enforcement efforts around the world to free those in slavery and punish the slave master.”
-Ambassador John Miller
U.S. Department of State
